Electrical Services in the West Midlands

AW Electrical Services cover a vast range of electrical disciplines from Electrical Installation Condition Reports (EICR), Portable Appliance Testing, Electric Vehicle Charging Point Installation, to Domestic and Commercial Electrical Design And Installation Services.

Consumer Unit (Fuse Box)

A fuse box, also sometimes known as a consumer unit, should be easy to find and is where the electricity in your home is controlled and distributed. It’s important that you know where your fuse box is in case you ever need to turn the electricity off in an emergency. It contains three things – the main switch, fuses and/or circuit breakers, and Residual Current Devices.

This allows you to turn off the electricity supply to your home. You might have more than one main switch, for example if your home has electric storage heaters. In this case you may have a separate fuse box.

These are switches that trip a circuit under dangerous conditions, and instantly disconnect the electricity.

These are automatic protection devices in the fuse box that switch off a circuit if they detect a fault. They are similar in size to fuses, but give more precise protection. When they ‘trip’, you can simply reset the switch. But make sure you correct the fault first.

Rewireable fuses have a piece of special fuse wire running between two screws. When a fault or overload current flows through the fuse wire, it will become hot and melt. The melted fuse breaks the circuit, disconnecting the faulty circuit and keeping you safe.

If you are concerned that your fusebox may need replacing, then please contact us immediately and we can install a modern unit with RCBO devices as show in the picture.

EV Charging Points

We are OZEV Approved Installers ("Office for Zero Emissions Vehicle") for Electric Vehicle Charging Points. We can apply for a grant of up to £350 for you to install an Electric Vehicle Charging Point in your home under the Home charge Scheme or up to £14,000 for you to install EV Charging Points at your Workplace under the Workplace Charging Scheme. We will carry out a free survey of your property to establish the best options for you.

Are mainly found at Motorway Services and other public locations where super fast charging is necessary during a journey. A typical example is Telsa Super Chargers which can charge the vehicle up to 80% in just 20 minutes.

Are the standard for home charging and workplace charging, they can be installed at homes, businesses and other public locations to enable users to charge their vehicles within a only few hours, depending on the vehicle and rating of the charging point. The most common fast charger we install is rated at 7kW which will charge most vehicles from 0-100% within 6-8 hours.
(or trickle chargers) are generally only for emergency charging and can take 12 hours or more to charge the vehicle, they tend to be designed to charge form a normal 13A plug socket and are often not designed to be used day in and day out as it can cause overload to the sockets in your house.
  • There are two main types of plug that are commonly used: Type 1 & Type 2
  • Type 2 –  plugs are the most commonly used and we believe the best option, but the type of plug you use depends which vehicle you have
  • Both types of plug can charge up to 32 amps but the type 2 plug also allows for 3 phase charging if your installation has this option. This enables faster charging in some situations

We install the following leading brands amongst others:

Testing & Inspections

Fully certified and trained in carrying out all forms of electrical testing, for domestic, commercial, and educational establishments with clear and detailed documentation produced for your health and safety file.

Regular testing of your electrical systems will provide peace of mind that your home or workplace is safe for you and your family or staff and that the likelihood of injury occurring due to electrical shock or fire has been reduced.
Having an up to date EICR shows that you understand the importance of remaining compliant and your responsibilities as set out in The Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and The Electricity at Work Regulations 1989.
Some insurance companies are requesting that electrical testing is conducted and evidenced on a regular basis. Should you need to make a claim based on a possible electrical fault, you may need to provide details of the process you have with regard to electrical safety, such as an EICR certificate. Check your insurance policy to see what the requirements are.
Not only will an EICR confirm that your electrical equipment is safe, it can also highlight areas where the system can be improved which could reduce the amount of electricity you use which will reflect well on your home or business’ carbon footprint.
By reducing your energy consumption, your business can save money. Also, if faults are identified early, they can be rectified before they accelerate and cause further unnecessary damage.
